I confess to sometimes skimming long essays, but NOT this one! I lingered on every sentence in creating "A New Font from Old Type." Your writing is as strong and clear as your font. I happily geeked out on the details of your thought and production processes, glad you described the journey as well as the map. While it might not feel this way to you, it seems you crafted this new font swiftly. A month? Probably need to add a decade of thinking to that, right? And here's an unexpected response you'll appreciate: I felt a wave of missing my father, z"l, who loved type fonts, had all the classics committed to memory, and would've loved reading about the birth of Swartz Gothic.
Thank you, Meredith! This is such a very kind comment and encouragement 😊
Also, so nice that it could bring about some good memories of your father!
And you're right, the entire thing took nearly the entire month of June, which honestly pushed me quite a bit to get it done. But yes, a decade or so of analyzing type and setting my own projects and working on lettering projects was good preparation for constructing and criticing this project on a very compressed schedule.
Utterly Awesome Sauce !!! Well drawn !!! ⚡⚡⚡
Thanks, Michael!! I'm glad you can appreciate it!
This is great…intrigued by each step and the thoughtfulness behind even the smallest of decisions. Really well done :-)
Thank you so much! I'm glad you can share in my enthusiasm for the details! 🤓
Fantastic stuff. I love its slight wobblyness which creates movement.
Marvellous :-)
Haha, yes! It is a bit wobbly and inconsistent, but I like the character 😊
Thanks for reading and the kind words!
